New lap theatre opened

On Tuesday 15 November around 70 guests – drawn from our hospital, the local community, suppliers and supporters – attended the official opening ceremony of our new laparoscopic operating theatre.

TV Broadcaster, Lynn Faulds Wood, herself a former bowel cancer patient, together with her husband and fellow broadcaster John Stapleton, performed the opening ceremony.  Lynn was particularly enthusiastic about the benefits of consultant surgeon Mr Robin Kennedy's enhanced recovery programme.

Guests were able to see the evidence of this programme by virtue of two video clips of St Mark's patients very soon after their surgery.
A short film of an elderly lady (in her 80s, if memory serves) walking around the hospital showing no signs of pain or even discomfort just two days after major bowel surgery had the audience gasping in disbelieving admiration.

We also had the privilege of watching live surgery from the new theatre so we could see and understand the enormous benefits of laparoscopic procedures.
