Chief's Chatter - 19th July 2010
Dear Friends
I want to start this blog by first congratulating our runners from the British 10k run who have collectively raised over £6,000 for research, education and training at St. Mark's. This is a tremendous effort and one which illustrates how fundraising for our vital work from the local community continues to go from strength to strength.
A special mention to Steve Mills who has raised nearly £2,000 at the time of writing and Gabriel Rozenberg who has raised nearly £1,200. Well done, gentlemen!
If you are interested in emulating their success and becoming involved in any of our events, please see our events page on this website. For those more committed athletes, for instance, we have the Royal Parks Half-Marathon on 10th October. You need to contact us soon however as places are selling fast.
On the other hand, for those of you who fancy a more adrenaline-soaked challenge, then you might prefer our Halloween Sky Dive on 31st October. For these or any of our other events, call Audrey on (020) 8235 4092 or email audrey.phongsathorn@nwlh.nhs.uk.

A long term patient of St. Mark's, Alan Powderham, has recently received one of the highest professional accolades in engineering.
The Foundation would like to congratulate Alan on his fortitude and achievements and also thank him for allowing us to share his extraordinary story.

After two successful shows, patient and comedian, Gareth Berliner has once again organised a fantastic night of comedy - Laughter is the Best Medicine - for St. Mark's, raising over £4,000 for our Intestinal Failure Unit.
The Foundation would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to Gareth and all the comedians who have turned up to make the event a rip roaring success.
Les Ainscough organised a ‘Sportafunathon' day to raise money for St. Mark's and Great Ormond Street hospitals. He and 13 other friends took part in a full day of sport competitions - from golf, rugby and cycling to basketball and tennis - and together raised over £4,000. This also includes £200 fines collected from the participants' misdemeanours!! Les shares his story below:

The Foundation is currently raising money for a new research which aims to develop less invasive treatments for early bowel cancer. Leading the research team for this breakthrough project are our Consultants, Mr. Robin Kennedy and Dr. Chris Fraser. It is in their beliefs that the project will help to spare up to 2,400 patients from major surgery each year in the UK.
